Waitangi

Painting – Oil on Board
45 x 30cm

This painting depicts the Tophat Class Sloop Waitangi which I sail with two friends out of the Sandringham Yacht Club in Melbourne.

The Tophat was designed in 1963 by the English firm of yacht designers Illingworth and Primrose (Captain John Illingworth being the instigator of the Sydney to Hobart and winning the first race in 1945 in Rani). The yacht was designed to handle the short chop of Port Phillip Bay as well as retaining the seaworthiness necessary to handle Southern Ocean conditions.

The design was also aimed at producing an economically priced yacht of widest possible appeal to both cruising and racing yachtsman.
