Tumlaren

Painting – Oil on Board
60 x 45 cm

The painting depicts classic Tumlaren class yachts racing on Port Phillip Bay, with the beautifully restored Zephyr in the foreground preparing to tack, whilst in the distance,  Avian is about to round the mark.

I first saw the Tumlaren class yachts at the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron in St Kilda in the 1970’s and was taken by their sleek lines and the dedication of their owners and crew in helping to keep the classic boats, many of which dated back to the late 1930s, in racing trim.  At a later stage I came across an article in a yachting magazine which included a full set of lines for the Tumlare  Zest, which enabled me to carve a small model. In more recent years I have seen some of the Tumlaren racing at Williamstown, and also a few on display in Docklands.

In developing the painting I referred to a range of photographs, including some great action shots by Roger Dundas(one of previous owners of Zephyr), as well as my own photographs, and reference to my model.

In 2017 I crewed on a friend’s Dragon Siena for some races in the Classic Boat Association of Australia’s Cup Regatta off Williamstown with the opportunity to also race against Zephyr and some other beautifully maintained Tums.
