HMAS Melbourne

Painting – Oil on Linen Board
61 x 45 cm
Private Collection

The painting depicts the Royal Australian Navy aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne in heavy seas off the Great Australian Bight in 1973.

The Melbourne was commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy in 1955 and was the flagship of the fleet for more than 20 years.

An excellent account of the ship is provided in the book HMAS Melbourne by Timothy Hall and published by George Allen & Unwin Australia Pty Ltd.
The painting was based on a series of photographs in the book which the author acknowledged had been provided by the Royal Australian Navy
